_The song, "Auld Lang Syne," is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English- speaking country in the world to bring in the New Year. In spite of the popularity of 'Auld Lang Syne', it has aptly been described as the song that nobody knows. Even in Scotland, hardly a gathering sings it correctly, without some members of the party butchering the words.
_Written by Robert Burns in 1741, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago," or simply, "the good old days."
_Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns
_Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
'Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
_
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
_We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine;
we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin' auld lang syne _
__
We two hae paidled i' the burn,_
We two hae paidled i' the burn,_
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne
_And here's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o' thine;
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne
_Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
and days of auld lang syne?
_
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

The kiss shared at the stroke of midnight in the United States is derived from masked balls that have been common throughout history. As tradition has it, the masks symbolize evil spirits from the old year and the kiss is the purification into the new year.

Whatever the reason - is it not the most romantic thing ever!!

Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.
Thanks for explaining that. I was just wondering about it last night and didn't know Robert Burns was the author. I loved this post. Thanks a ton!
P.S. I just noticed your story on the side. I've had a peek into the frightening window that is Meth when our condo building was invaded (it's a long story) by Meth cooks, addicts and sellers at one point. I'm sure you are aware of the hell you have saved those children from. But, I am one more person who knows. Bless you.
Happy New Year! I wish you all the best for 2008. Our customs in Quebec would be to wish you health, joy and happiness (which obviously I do). And I hope that your dreams come true.
